Dedicated to the memory of Marilyn

Marilyn Lee Vance (1928-2020)

Marilyn Vance, age 92, died in Chapel Hill, NC on July 27, 2020. Marilyn was born in Chicago, IL on March 2, 1928, to James Wilbur Bridge and Ruth Gammill Bridge. She grew up in Elgin, IL and graduated from Elgin High School and later Ohio Wesleyan University where she majored in music education. Marilyn was a talented musician, performing violin recitals beginning at age 5 for community groups under the guidance of her aunt Eicele. She also sang in church choirs and in a barbershop quartet. Following college, she taught elementary music in Royal Oak, MI and worked in a sheet music store in Columbus OH.

Marilyn married Bennett L. “Bud” Vance, then a dental student at Ohio State University, in 1953. They lived in Cambridge, OH and Willoughby, OH before returning to Columbus, where Bud entered oral surgery residency and later opened an oral surgery practice while he was a faculty member at Ohio State. During this time, the couple moved to Worthington, OH, where they lived for 35 years.

Marilyn played violin in string quartets and orchestras throughout central Ohio and she and Bud enjoyed traveling, tent and trailer camping, and trips to visit their son during his escapades in destinations across the continental U.S. and extending to England, Costa Rica, and Alaska. The couple moved to Chapel Hill in 2000 to be closer to their son and family.

Marilyn is survived by her son, Eric Douglas Vance, grandson, Spalding Clark Vance, both of Chapel Hill, her sister and best friend, Judith Bridge Hunter, of Atlanta, GA, and nephews Burtch Hunter of Atlanta, GA and Bridge Hunter of Boston, MA. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Bennett L. Vance, and daughter-in-law, Anne L. Schroder.

Marilyn was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother whose supportive and positive personality never faded. She never sought attention and most often did the little things that provided comfort and made life better for others. She was a lifelong Christian and gentle soul who never raised her voice in anger and always had a song in her heart. We will miss her.

Thoughts

Eric As you know, Cindy and I thought very highly of your parents. Your dad was one of my professors while I was both in dental school and my oral surgery residency. He was a great and big man, and I learned much from him. Your mother was a sweetheart. 2 very special people. My wife Cindy and I enjoyed them. My one son is also a graduate of OWU where he played lacrosse. We still frequently drive by you house on Dublin Granville Rd and think of them! Unlike your parents, we have 5 children and 7 grandchildren and 2 more on the way, and it’s unlikely to end there! Most of those great people who trained me at OSU and made me what I am today are gone and they are missed. Your dad, Bill Wallace, Bernie Snyder, Bob Lauer, my mentor and chair of oral surgery after Bill Wallace (Larry Peterson) and others. BTW, I almost did my oral surgery training at UNC Chapel Hill but chose OSU instead. You mother lived a long life and obviously was a wonderful woman and mother and grandmother. She will be missed. Feel free to contact me at any time if you like. My email address is rscheetz@omfso.com and I will give you my phone number if you send me a brief request. Rick and Cindy Scheetz. BTW. Sorry for the delayed response. With all the kids and grandkids it’s busy here😁

Eric, I saw the Bill Wallace obit. Your note mentioned that your mom had recently. passed. I send my condolence for her death. Your dad was in our wedding party and we for were friends for many years. I remember college years and the Psi O parties. Bill died September 2003, but I attended the 50 year dental class reunion held in Columbus. That was the last time I visited with your mom and dad. You lived at 1083 Sells Ave.West when your dad was back in the oral surgery program. We lived in the same apartment when Bill was in the oral surgery program. Small world. Marilyn and I were Try Delta sorority sisters, different schools. I shall contact Janet Davidson to let her know of the passing. Ed Davidson, good friend , classmate, of Bud and Bill died last February. The old gang is slowly passing on. Jane Ritter

Eric, It would be difficult if not impossible to explain to you and Spalding how sad Peggy and I felt after getting your email. Over the years we had come to cherish our unique relationship with each and all making up the Vance family. Your Dad out walking the dog, Spalding up at the tennis courts, your evolving friendship with Bob and Peggy commingled in time with your family's tragic loss of Anne .... then your father and now the loss of your wonderful, kind and talented Mother: Ms.Marilyn Vance. As you remember Peggy and I got to be with your Mother and so many at her 90th birthday luncheon. We got to visit and chat one more time up in her apartment. Now sadly that has turned out to be the last time we saw or spoke with Marilyn. We will always remember and never forget! - Peggy and Bob O'Connell, neighbors and friends
